Company History

The Capitol Bancorp Limited community bank network began in March of 1988 when the company acquired Capitol National Bank in Lansing, Michigan.


1988
Capitol Bancorp Limited was established in March 1988 as a one-bank holding company acquiring 100% of the outstanding stock of Capitol National Bank in Lansing, MI.
Capitol National Bank Capitol Bancorp Limited acquired 100% of the outstanding stock of Capitol National Bank, which had been operating as a community bank in the Lansing area since 1982. It was organized as a new bank by the same individuals who started Capitol Bancorp Limited.
1990
Capitol Bancorp Limited opened a bank in Ann Arbor, Michigan and also acquired a bank in Portage, Michigan.
Ann Arbor Commerce Bank Ann Arbor Commerce Bank opened for business in October of 1990. This bank was organized and opened in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by Capitol Bancorp Limited.
Portage Commerce Bank Portage Commerce Bank, located in Portage, Michigan, open since 1987, was acquired by Capitol Bancorp Limited in July of 1990. It was originally organized by several of the same individuals who started Capitol Bancorp Limited.
Capitol National Bank Capitol National Bank was established in 1982.
1992
Capitol Bancorp Limited acquired a savings and loan bank and converted it to its fourth bank in the state of Michigan.
Oakland Commerce Bank Oakland Commerce Bank, located in Farmington Hills, Michigan, was converted from a savings and loan and acquired by Capitol Bancorp Limited in July 1992. Included in the acquisition was a mortgage company, now called Amera Mortgage Corporation.
Ann Arbor Commerce Bank Ann Arbor Commerce Bank was established in October of 1990.
Portage Commerce Bank Portage Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1990.
Capitol National Bank Capitol National Bank was established in 1982.
1994
Capitol Bancorp Limited acquired its fifth bank in the state of Michigan.
Paragon Bank & Trust Paragon Bank and Trust, founded in Holland, Michigan in 1990, was acquired by Capitol Bancorp Limited in June 1994.
Oakland Commerce Bank Oakland Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1992.
Ann Arbor Commerce Bank Ann Arbor Commerce Bank was established in October of 1990.
Portage Commerce Bank Portage Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1990.
Capitol National Bank Capitol National Bank was established in 1982.
1995
Capitol Bancorp Limited organized its sixth bank in the state of Michigan.
Grand Haven Bank Grand Haven Bank, located in Grand Haven, Michigan, was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited in May 1995.
Paragon Bank & Trust Paragon Bank & Trust was acquired in June of 1994.
Oakland Commerce Bank Oakland Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1992.
Ann Arbor Commerce Bank Ann Arbor Commerce Bank was established in October of 1990.
Portage Commerce Bank Portage Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1990.

1996
Capitol Bancorp Limited entered the Arizona market when it opened a bank in Tucson. The Company also added a seventh bank in the state of Michigan.
Macomb Community Bank Macomb Community Bank, located in Clinton Township, Michigan, was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited, in September 1996.
Bank of Tucson Bank of Tucson was established in June of 1996.
Grand Haven Bank Grand Haven Bank was established in May of 1995.
Paragon Bank & Trust Paragon Bank & Trust was acquired in June of 1994.
Oakland Commerce Bank Oakland Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1992.

1997
Capitol Bancorp Limited's presence in the state of Michigan grew, bringing the total number of banks in the state to nine. The Company also opened a second bank in the state of Arizona.
Muskegon Commerce Bank Muskegon Commerce Bank, which opened in Muskegon, Michigan in December 1997, was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited.
Valley First Community Bank Valley First Community Bank, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited in June of 1997.
Sun Community Bancorp Limited Sun Community Bancorp Limited (SCBL), an Arizona-based second tier holding company, was formed in May 1997 as a result of a share exchange agreement with the shareholders of Bank of Tucson. Shareholders approved a plan of share exchange effective March 31, 2002, which made SCBL a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp Limited and brought all SCBL banks into direct affiliation with Capitol Bancorp Limited.
Brighton Commerce Bank Brighton Commerce Bank, located in Brighton, Michigan, was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited in January of 1997.
Macomb Community Bank Macomb Community Bank was established in September of 1996.
Bank of Tucson Bank of Tucson, located in Tucson, Arizona, was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited in June of 1996. This was Capitol Bancorp Limited's first bank in the state of Arizona.
Grand Haven Bank Grand Haven Bank was established in May of 1995.
Paragon Bank & Trust Paragon Bank & Trust was acquired in June of 1994.
Oakland Commerce Bank Oakland Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1992.
Ann Arbor Commerce Bank Ann Arbor Commerce Bank was established in October of 1990.
Portage Commerce Bank Portage Commerce Bank was acquired in July of 1990.

1998
Capitol Bancorp Limited opened two additional banks in the state of Michigan and four banks in the state of Arizona, bringing its total number of banks to 17.
Sun Community Mortgage Sun Community Mortgage Company, an affiliate of Bank of Tucson, was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited to function as a mortgage banking affiliate.
Sunrise Bank of Arizona Sunrise Bank of Arizona, located in Phoenix, Arizona opened in December 1998. It was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited.
Detroit Commerce Bank Detroit Commerce Bank, located in downtown Detroit, Michigan was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited and opened in December 1998.
Mesa Bank Mesa Bank was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited. Mesa Bank opened in Mesa, Arizona in October 1998.
Southern Arizona Community Bank Southern Arizona Community Bank opened in August 1998 in northwest Tucson and was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited.
Camelback Community Bank Camelback Community Bank opened in Phoenix, Arizona in May 1998. Camelback was Sun Community Bancorp Limited's third Arizona bank.
kent Commerce Bank Kent Commerce Bank, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was opened in January 1998 by Capitol Bancorp Limited.
Muskegon Commerce Bank Muskegon Commerce Bank was established in December of 1997.
Valley First Community Bank Valley First Community Bank was established in June of 1997.
Brighton Commerce Bank Brighton Commerce Bank was established in January of 1997.
Macomb Community Bank Macomb Community Bank was established in September of 1996.
Bank of Tucson Bank of Tucson was established in June of 1996.
Grand Haven Bank Grand Haven Bank was established in May of 1995.

Capitol Bancorp Limited entered the Indiana and Nevada markets, opening two banks in Nevada and one bank in Elkhart, Indiana.
Red Rock Community Bank Red Rock Community Bank, organized by Nevada Community Bancorp Limited, opened in Las Vegas, Nevada, in November 1999.
Elkhart Community Bank Elkhart Community Bank, in Elkhart, Indiana, opened in September 1999. Elkhart Community Bank was the first bank organized by Indiana Community Bancorp Limited.
Desert Community Bank Desert Community Bank was the first bank organized by Nevada Community Bancorp Limited. Desert Community Bank opened in August 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Indiana Community Bancorp was formed as a second-tier holding company in February 1999. It and its two subsidiaries, Elkhart Community Bank and Goshen Community Bank, became wholly-owned by Capitol Bancorp on September 30, 2002.
Nevada Community Bancorp Limited was formed in February 1999 and held four Nevada banks. It became wholly-owned by Capitol Bancorp on January 17, 2003.
Sunrise Bank of Arizona Sunrise Bank of Arizona was established in December 1998.
Detroit Commerce Bank Detroit Commerce Bank was established in December 1998.
Mesa Bank Mesa Bank was established in October 1998.
Southern Arizona Community Bank Southern Arizona Community Bank was established in August of 1998.
Camelback Community Bank Camelback Community Bank was established in May of 1998.
kent Commerce Bank Kent Commerce Bank was established in January of 1998.

Capitol Bancorp Limited opened five banks in 2000, bringing its total number of banks to 25. The Company also opened its first bank in the state of New Mexico.
Yuma Community Bank December 2000 marked the opening of Yuma Community Bank, the eighth bank organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited.
Goshen Community Bank Goshen Community Bank, which opened in September 2000, was the second bank organized by Indiana Community Bancorp Limited.
Arrowhead Community Bank Organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited, Arrowhead Community Bank, located in Glendale, Arizona, opened in September of 2000.
Sunrise Bank of Albuquerque Sunrise Capital Corporation organized its first bank in the state of New Mexico. Sunrise Bank of Albuquerque opened in April of 2000.
Black Mountain Community Bank Black Mountain Community Bank in Henderson, Nevada, organized by Nevada Community Bancorp Limited, opened in March of 2000.
Red Rock Community Bank Red Rock Community Bank was established in November of 1999.
Elkhart Community Bank Elkhart Community Bank was established in September of 1999.
Desert Community Bank Desert Community Bank was established in August of 1999.
Sunrise Bank of Arizona Sunrise Bank of Arizona was established in December 1998.
Detroit Commerce Bank Detroit Commerce Bank was established in December 1998.

Capitol Bancorp Limited entered the California market, opening its first bank in San Diego.
Capitol Bancorp Limited First California Northern Bancorp was formed by Sun Community Bancorp in March of 2001. It opened its first bank in Napa Valley on March 1, 2002. It became wholly-owned by Capitol Bancorp in 2004.
Sunrise Bank of San Diego Sunrise Bank of San Diego opened in January of 2001. The Company's first bank in the state of California was organized by Sunrise Capital Corporation.
Yuma Community Bank Yuma Community Bank was established in December of 2000.
Goshen Community Bank Goshen Community Bank was established in September of 2000.
Arrowhead Community Bank Arrowhead Community Bank was established in September of 2000.
Sunrise Bank of Albuquerque Sunrise Bank of Albuquerque was established in April of 2000.
Black Mountain Community Bank Black Mountain Community Bank was established in March of 2000.

Capitol Bancorp Limited opened three additional banks in 2002 and entered the Georgia and Texas markets by establishing loan production offices.
Capitol Bancorp Limited and Nevada Community Bancorp Limited entered into a share exchange agreement in 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making Nevada Bancorp Limited a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp Limited and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol.
First Carolina Southern Bancorp: First California Southern Bancorp was formed in October of 2002 as a subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp Limited. This second-tier holding company opened its first community bank in Escondido on October 14, 2003.
Capitol Bancorp Limited and Indiana Community Bancorp Limited (ICBL) entered into a share exchange agreement effective September 30, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making ICBL a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp Limited and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol.
Capitol Bancorp Limited and Sunrise Capital Corporation entered into a share exchange agreement effective September 30, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making Sunrise Capital Corporation a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol.
Capitol Bancorp Limited's California presence expanded into Orange County with a loan production office organized by Sunrise Capital Corporation in August.
In June, Capitol Bancorp Limited entered the state of Georgia by establishing a loan production office in Atlanta through Sunrise Bank of Arizona.
Capitol Bancorp Limited announced in May of 2002 that it had entered the Texas market. Sunrise Bank of Arizona opened loan production offices in Dallas and Houston.

Bank of Escondido Capitol Bancorp Limited opened its 30th bank, Bank of Escondido in Southern California, on October 14, 2003. Bank of Escondido became the Company's third community bank in California.
Capitol Bancorp Limited Capitol Bancorp Limited moved from the NASDAQ to the world's largest equities market, the New York Stock Exchange, on June 24, 2003. Chairman and CEO Joseph D. Reid rang the opening bell and initiated the Company's first trade under the new ticker symbol - CBC.

First Carolina State Bank First Carolina State Bank in Rocky Mount, North Carolina became the 31st community bank in the Capitol Bancorp Limited network on April 1, 2004.
Bank of Escondido Bank of Escondido was established on October 14, 2003.
Napa Community Bank Napa Community Bank was established on March 1, 2002.
Bank of Las Vegas Bank of Las Vegas was established on February 11, 2002.
Sunrise Bank of San Diego Sunrise Bank of San Diego was established in January of 2001.

In 2005, Capitol Bancorp Limited opened nine banks, bringing its total number of banks to 41. The Company also entered into the states of Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Washington.
Bank of Santa Barbara Bank of Santa Barbara opened for business on December 19, 2005. This was Capitol Bancorp Limited's sixth bank in the state of California and the 41st community bank in the Capitol network.
Summit Bank of Kansas City Summit Bank of Kansas City opened for business on November 18, 2005. This was Capitol Bancorp Limited’s first bank in the state of Missouri and the 40th community bank in the Capitol network.
Bank of Belleville Bank of Belleville opened for business on November 4, 2005. This was Capitol Bancorp Limited’s first bank in the state of Illinois and the 39th community bank in the Capitol network.
Bank of San Francisco Bank of San Francisco opened for business on August 1, 2005. This was Capitol Bancorp Limited’s 38th community bank and the Company's fifth bank in California.

In 2009, Capitol Bancorp Limited consolidated 14 of its banks into two banks in the states of Arizona and Michigan. The consolidations were part of a strategic initiative to realign bank resources, create additional efficiencies and enhance capital preservation. The Company also divested two banks, Bank of Santa Barbara and Yuma Community Bank.
Sunrise Bank of Arizona Sunrise Bank of Arizona expanded on December 15, 2009, when five affiliates, Arrowhead Community Bank, Asian Bank of Arizona, Camelback Community Bank, Colonia Bank and Mesa Bank, consolidated with the bank. Sunrise Bank of Arizona serves customers in the same tradition throughout the Valley.
