Company History

Portage Commerce Bank, located in Portage, Michigan, open since 1987, was acquired by Capitol Bancorp Limited in July of 1990. It was originally organized by several of the same individuals who started Capitol Bancorp Limited.

Bank of Tucson, located in Tucson, Arizona, was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited in June 1996. This was Capitol's first bank in the state of Arizona.

Brighton Commerce Bank, located in Brighton, Michigan, was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited in January of 1997.

Sun Community Bancorp Limited (SCBL), an Arizona-based second tier holding company, was formed in May 1997 as a result of a share exchange agreement with the shareholders of Bank of Tucson. Shareholders approved a plan of share exchange effective March 31, 2002, which made SCBL a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and brought all SCBL banks into direct affiliation with Capitol Bancorp Limited.

Valley First Community Bank, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited in June of 1997.

Kent Commerce Bank, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was opened in January 1998 by Capitol Bancorp Limited.

Camelback Community Bank opened in Phoenix, Arizona in May 1998. Camelback was Sun Community Bancorp Limited's third Arizona bank.

Southern Arizona Community Bank, opened in August 1998 in northwest Tucson and was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited.

Mesa Bank was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited. Mesa Bank opened in Mesa, Arizona in October 1998.

Detroit Commerce Bank, located in downtown Detroit, Michigan was organized by Capitol Bancorp Limited and opened in December 1998.

Sunrise Bank of Arizona, located in Phoenix, Arizona opened in December 1998. It was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited.

East Valley Bank opened in June 1999. East Valley, located in Chandler, Arizona, was organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited.

Desert Community Bank was the first bank organized by Nevada Community Bancorp Limited. Desert Community Bank opened in August 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Elkhart Community Bank, in Elkhart, Indiana opened in September 1999. Elkhart Community Bank was the first bank organized by Indiana Community Bancorp Limited.

Black Mountain Community Bank in Henderson, Nevada, organized by Nevada Community Bancorp Limited, opened in March 2000.

Sunrise Capital Corporation organized its first bank in the state of New Mexico. Sunrise Bank of Albuquerque opened in April 2000.

Organized by Sun Community Bancorp Limited, Arrowhead Community Bank, located in Glendale, Arizona, opened in September of 2000.

Goshen Community Bank, which opened in September 2000, was the second bank organized by Indiana Community Bancorp Limited.

Bank of Las Vegas opened February 11, 2002. This was the fourth bank in the state of Nevada organized by Nevada Community Bancorp Limited.

Napa Community Bank opened on March 1, 2002. This bank was the second bank in California, and the first de novo organized by First California Northern Bancorp.

Capitol Bancorp Limited and Sun Community Bancorp Limited (SCBL) entered into a stock exchange agreement effective March 31, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure.

Capitol Bancorp Limited announced in May 2002 that it had entered the Texas market. Sunrise Bank of Arizona opened loan production offices in Dallas and Houston.

In June, Capitol Bancorp Limited entered the state of Georgia by establishing a loan production office in Atlanta through Sunrise Bank of Arizona.

Capitol Bancorp Limited's California presence expanded into Orange County with a loan production office organized by Sunrise Capital Corporation in August.

Capitol Bancorp Limited and Sunrise Capital Corporation entered into a share exchange agreement effective September 30, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making Sunrise Capital Corporation a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol.

Capitol Bancorp Limited and Indiana Community Bancorp Limited (ICBL) entered into a share exchange agreement effective September 30, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making ICBL a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol.

Capitol Bancorp Limited and Nevada Community Bancorp Limited entered into a share exchange agreement in 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making Nevada Bancorp Limited a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol.

Capitol Bancorp moved from the Nasdaq to the world's largest equities market, the New York Stock Exchange, on June 24, 2003. Chairman and CEO Joseph D. Reid rang the opening bell and initiated the company's first trade under the new ticker symbol, CBC.

Capitol Bancorp was named by Fortune magazine as one of the "100 fastest growing small public companies in the U.S."

Capitol Bancorp opened its 30th bank, Bank of Escondido in Southern California, on October 14, 2003. Bank of Escondido became the Corporation's third community bank in California.

First Carolina State Bank in Rocky Mount, North Carolina became the 31st community bank in the Capitol Bancorp network on April 1, 2004.

Bank of Michigan opened for business on January 10, 2005. It is Capitol's 33rd community bank and its 12th bank in Michigan.

Peoples State Bank in Jeffersonville, Georgia joined the Capitol network in April. This is Capitol's first full-service community bank in Georgia.

Bank of Bellevue opened its doors for business on June 15. It is Capitol's 35th community bank and its first bank in the Northwest Region.

Fort Collins Commerce Bank opened on June 27, 2005. The bank is Capitol's first community bank in Colorado.

Bank of Auburn Hills opened its doors for business on July 13. It is Capitol's 37th community bank and represents the company's 13th bank in Michigan.

Bank of San Francisco opened for business on August 1, 2005. It is Capitol's 38th community bank and represents the company's 5th bank in California.

Bank of Belleville opened for business on November 4, 2005. This is Capitol's first bank in the state of Illinois and is the 39th community bank in the Capitol network.

Summit Bank of Kansas City opened for business on November 18, 2005. This is Capitol's first bank in the state of Missouri and is the 40th community bank in the Capitol network.

Community Bank of Rowan opened for business on February 21, 2006. This is Capitol's second bank in North Carolina and the 42nd community bank in the Capitol network.

Asian Bank of Arizona opened for business in the Chinese Cultural Center in Phoenix on April 27, 2006. The new community bank is the 43rd separately chartered bank in the Capitol Bancorp network and the tenth Capitol affiliated bank in Arizona.

Evansville Commerce Bank opened for business in the historic Hulman Building in Evansville, Indiana on May 30, 2006. The new community bank is the 44th separately chartered bank in the Capitol Bancorp network and the third Capitol affiliated bank in Indiana.

Bank of Valdosta opened for business in Valdosta, Georgia on June 21, 2006. The new community bank is the 45th separately chartered bank in the Capitol Bancorp network and the second Capitol affiliated bank in Georgia.

Sunrise Bank of Atlanta opened for business as a full service bank on June 21, 2006 after operating as a loan production office in Atlanta, Georgia since 2002. This bank represents the 46th separately chartered bank in the Capitol Bancorp network and the third Capitol affiliated bank in Georgia.

Bank of Everett opened for business in Everett, Washington on June 30, 2006. The new community bank is the 47th separately chartered bank in the Capitol Bancorp network and the second Capitol affiliated bank in Washington.

Bank of Maumee opened for business in Maumee, Ohio on October 2, 2006. The new community bank is the 48th separately chartered bank in the Capitol Bancorp network and the first Capitol affiliated bank in Ohio.
