Company History
The Capitol Bancorp Limited community bank network began in March of 1988 when it acquired Capitol National Bank in Lansing, Michigan. Since then, 63 individually chartered community banks have been added to the company. As of May 2008, the Corporation has 13 banks in Michigan, 10 banks in Arizona, eight in California, five banks in Nevada, four in Washington, three banks in Indiana, four in Colorado, three in Georgia, three in North Carolina, two in Missouri, two in Ohio, two in Texas, and one in each of the following states: Illinois, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, and Oregon.

Capitol Bancorp Limited was established in March 1988 as a one-bank holding company acquiring 100% of the outstanding stock of Capitol National Bank in Lansing, MI. Capitol National Bank had been operating as a community bank in the Lansing area since 1982. It was organized as a new bank by the same individuals who started Capitol Bancorp Limited. |

Sun Community Bancorp Limited (SCBL), an Arizona-based second tier holding company, was formed in May 1997 as a result of a share exchange agreement with the shareholders of Bank of Tucson. Shareholders approved a plan of share exchange effective March 31, 2002, which made SCBL a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and brought all SCBL banks into direct affiliation with Capitol Bancorp Limited. |

Capitol Bancorp Limited and Sun Community Bancorp Limited (SCBL) entered into a stock exchange agreement effective March 31, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure. Capitol Bancorp Limited announced in May 2002 that it had entered the Texas market. Sunrise Bank of Arizona opened loan production offices in Dallas and Houston. In June, Capitol Bancorp Limited entered the state of Georgia by establishing a loan production office in Atlanta through Sunrise Bank of Arizona. Capitol Bancorp Limited's California presence expanded into Orange County with a loan production office organized by Sunrise Capital Corporation in August. Capitol Bancorp Limited and Sunrise Capital Corporation entered into a share exchange agreement effective September 30, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making Sunrise Capital Corporation a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol. Capitol Bancorp Limited and Indiana Community Bancorp Limited (ICBL) entered into a share exchange agreement effective September 30, 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making ICBL a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol. Capitol Bancorp Limited and Nevada Community Bancorp Limited entered into a share exchange agreement in 2002. The arrangement simplified corporate structure by making Nevada Bancorp Limited a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp and its banks direct affiliates of Capitol. |

First California Southern Bancorp was formed in October 2002 as a subsidiary of Capitol Bancorp Limited. This second-tier holding company opened its first community bank in Escondido on October 14, 2003. |

Capitol Bancorp moved from the Nasdaq to the world's largest equities market, the New York Stock Exchange, on June 24, 2003. Chairman and CEO Joseph D. Reid rang the opening bell and initiated the company's first trade under the new ticker symbol, CBC. Capitol Bancorp was named by Fortune magazine as one of the "100 fastest growing small public companies in the U.S." |
