Company Information

Capitol Bancorp Limited is a uniquely structured affiliation of small community banks. Each bank, which typically has only one location, is focused on meeting the banking needs of entrepreneurs, professionals and other individuals seeking individually-tailored service. Each bank has full local decision-making authority in making loans and delivery of other banking services. Each bank is managed by an on-site president and management team under the direction of its local board of directors. The bank's Board is generally comprised of business leaders from that bank's community.

Capitol Bancorp Limited's affiliate banks are located in the states of Michigan, Arizona, Indiana, Nevada, New Mexico, California, North Carolina, Georgia, Washington, Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, New York, Oregon, Nebraska, and Texas. Plans are underway for expansion into additional markets.

Although viewed by regulators as a bank holding company, Capitol Bancorp Limited describes itself as a bank development company. The concept of bank development differs from 'bank holding' because it is more active, proactive and dynamic.

Capitol Bancorp Limited views bank development as:

  • Identifying opportunities for development of new banks
  • Recruiting management from the local community for new banks
  • Recruiting directors from the local community for new banks
  • Facilitating the regulatory process for new banks
  • Raising capital for new banks
  • Mentoring new banks through their most crucial and formative periods
  • Managing Capitol Bancorp Limited's investments in its banks
