LANSING, Mich., and PHOENIX, Ariz.: August 17, 2005: The board of directors of Capitol Bancorp Limited (NYSE:CBC) has announced the promotion of Joseph D. Reid III to Director of Bank Development. In this position Reid is responsible for all bank development activities for the Corporation including serving as the liaison between the Corporation's banks in development and the national and state regulatory agencies that review and approve bank applications. He also is responsible for all legal and regulatory aspects required during the organization of a de novo bank as well as those required during the acquisition of an existing bank.

Capitol has opened five new community banks this year and acquired a majority interest in a bank in Georgia. Currently, the Corporation has five community banks in various stages of development.

Reid joined Capitol Bancorp in 1998 as Corporate Counsel. In this capacity he was involved with a wide array of legal projects at both the corporate and the bank level.

Reid earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Hope College in Holland, MI; a Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Law where he graduated magna cum laude; and a Master of Business Administration from the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University. He currently serves on the board of directors for First Carolina State Bank, Capitol's affiliate community bank in North Carolina.
