LANSING, Mich. and PHOENIX, Ariz.: June 26, 2006: Capitol Bancorp Limited (NYSE: CBC), a $3.6 billion national community bank development company, announced today the opening of its 45th and 46th individually chartered community banks, Bank of Valdosta and Sunrise Bank of Atlanta. The two new banks, both in Georgia, represent Capitol Bancorp's second and third community banks in that state. Peoples State Bank in Jeffersonville, Georgia, was Capitol's first full service Georgia bank. Sunrise Bank of Atlanta had been operating as a loan production office since 2002.

Earlier this month Capitol Bancorp announced the opening of its 44th community bank, Evansville Commerce Bank in Indiana. Thus far in 2006, the Corporation has opened five de novo community banks and currently has applications pending for three de novo banks in three states.

"Our highly successful business model of opening separately chartered, locally managed and run community banks, affirms our strong commitment to preserving and growing the community banking model," said Capitol Bancorp Chairman and CEO Joseph D. Reid. "Both the Atlanta and the Valdosta banks will be excellent additions to their local business environments because of their local management and their understanding of the varied aspects of their respective communities."

Reid added that the state of Georgia offers a compelling economic environment for business and entrepreneurs which represent Capitol's banks targeted client base. "We believe there are many opportunities in Georgia and through the experience of our local bankers and bank board members we are well-positioned to build on, and contribute to, the already vibrant Georgia economy."

Leading Sunrise Bank of Atlanta is Charles H. Green, president and founder of the bank. He is a 23-year veteran of banking in the Atlanta area and has authored several books on lending to small business. He is the Chairman of the Fulton County Arts Council.

Bank of Valdosta is led by Valdosta native Matt Stanaland, who has more than 15 years in the financial services industry, all in Valdosta.

Sunrise Bank of Atlanta and Bank of Valdosta offer a full slate of products and services for small and mid-sized community businesses, entrepreneurs and high net-worth individuals.
